Svenska som andraspråk

Kronoby folkhögskola har haft undervisning i svenska som andra språk sedan hösten 1989. Orientation Course startade ett par år senare. Då endast 12 studerande antas till kursen, blir inlärningen effektiv. Studerande med hög motivation brukar lära sig snabbt, eftersom vi arbetar utgående från principen att var och en får lära sig så mycket och så snabbt han/hon kan.

Därför studerar vi både i små grupper, individuellt och alla tillsammans. I det finländska arbetslivet är det viktigt att dels kunna ta individuellt ansvar och dels kunna samarbeta med andra. Därför vill vi på Orientation Course arbeta på samma sätt.

Kurserna för nybörjare och för längre hunna (=avancerad svenska för dem som redan kan prata svenska men vill lära sig mera) undervisas parallellt med hjälp av en deltidsassistent. Ibland arbetar vi alla tillsammans med ett gemensamt tema. Vi har också lekfulla repetitioner och diskussioner, delvis i små grupper och delvis alla tillsammans. Nybörjarna stimuleras av de längre hunna, som i sin tur får nyttig repetition.

Vi använder många olika texter och övningar, men har Mål-serien som utgångspunkt. Nybörjarna studerar Mål 1-2 samt Sagor och sanningar. Avancerad svenska börjar med Mål 3 och fortsätter med Kom i mål. Kursprogrammet anpassas delvis efter studerandenas behov och önskemål.

Språk och kultur hör ihop. Vi diskuterar likheter och olikheter för att förstå det finska samhället. Vi studerar Finlands historia, geografi, näringsliv, sociala och politiska system och jämför med våra hemländer.

Data måste alla kunna idag, så därför har vi också dataundervisning på Orientation Course. Likaså måste man kunna lite finska. För att studierna inte skall bli så teoretiska har vi också slöjd/hantverk på schemat. Det ger både social samvaro, praktiskt kunnande och praktisk svenska. Av samma orsak är vi ute i naturen ibland. Vi bjuder också de andra eleverna på våra hemländers kulturer genom att exempelvis laga mat ett par gånger per termin.

The school and the program

Finland has two official languages, Finnish and Swedish. Swedish is the minority language, spoken by 6 % of the population, mainly in the coastal areas of the country. There is a complete school system (kindergarten to university) in Swedish. Swedish is often seen as the key to the Scandinavian countries.

Kronoby folkhögskola is a small folk high school, by definition a residential college for adults, with less than 100 students. The main working language is Swedish. We are situated on the west coast of Finland, between the two towns of Kokkola and Pietarsaari, Vaasa being appr. 110 km north of Kronoby. The Kokkola-Pietarsaari airport is located in Kronoby.

Orientation Course is both for absolute beginners and more advanced students who want to get a thorough command of the language. The programs are partly adapted  to the needs of the students.

Swedish for Beginners is focused on communicative exercises and basic grammar, without forgetting writing, though. The Advanced level focuses more on  texts of various subjects, idioms and essay writing, combined with discussions, of course.

We use a variety of texts and exercises, but the basic text books are part of the Mål-series: Mål 1-2 and Sagor och Sanningar for Beginner`s level, and Mål 3 as a starting point for the Advanced level.

The aim of  Orientation Course is to give the students both a theoretical and practical knowledge of Swedish. Since culture is an essential part of any language,  it is integrated in the language course. Finnish society, that is, Finnish history, geography, and culture,  as well as the social and political system of Finland, will be dealt with  as part of the language course especially during the spring term.

As small group activities are a central element in Finnish working and business life, it is also an important way of conducting the studies. The different levels will be taught parallelly, partly with the aid of a teaching assistant. Every now and then the groups work together on a common theme. We have repetitions and discussions, serious and more playful, sometimes separately, sometimes together. The mixed groups have proved to be efficient. Beginners are challenged and stimulated by the more advanced students, and the advanced students can recapitulate and gain practical experience.

Computing is an everyday tool for many students today, and Orientation Course is no exception. Writing, calculating, graphics and e-mail programs can be freely used , and there is a direct Internet contact available. Finnish is the majority language of Finland. Therefore, basic Finnish is part of the course. Sloyd (handicrafts) and outdoor activities are also part of the program, both representing essential study programs at Kronoby folkhögskola. These subjects have been included in the program of Orientation Course to further the communicative, cultural and social competence of the students. We also try to have "Exotic Food Day" once in a while, because cooking is a good way of sharing your cultural heritage with others.

A complete application for Orientation Course includes:

1) application form (can be obtained from school or Internet)
2) written presentation of yourself
3) identity information (passport or similar)
4) copies of documents showing previous education
5) recommendation, preferably from a Finnish organization or person

Applications are dealt with in the order of arrival. A maximum of twelve students will be accepted into the group.
